As Told Over Perch Brunch

One of my favorite dad jokes is to walk into an empty restaurant, turn to a friend and say, “Like how I rented it out for you?”

No one ever laughs, so I keep saying it, waiting for it to land. FINALLY my friend chuckled when I said it as we walked into Perch for brunch this Sunday. We considered making reservations, but since we showed up at 10:03 a.m. and the place opens at 10 a.m., we thought we’d be safe.

And that we were. We got a great parking spot, took a moment to admire the wall and then were greeted by a vibrant host who happily sat us at a prime table. Then, he picked a beautiful flower and placed it between us.

I had done extensive research before going to Perch, and the green papaya salad looked divine on Yelp. It featured pork, thai basil, chile and scallions, which are all ingredients I adore. I had not landed on which drink I wanted ahead of time, so I spent my first few minutes contemplating what to order. I settled on the Bolivian bombshell. I’m not usually a brandy person, but thought I should give it a go anyways since there was coconut, lemon and some other things I didn’t know what they were.

Our waitress was amazing and our service was fast. We ordered coffee and SHE WARMED UP THE GLASSES FOR IT. Then the food came out almost immediately.

My friend got the Chesapeake omelet, which featured smoke salmon, crab, shrimp and cheese. It was plated with salad, potatoes AND fruit.

While I was happy with my choice, I was BLOWN AWAY with how much food they gave her. The entire plate was piled high with food.

The green papaya salad was flavorful, light and a fun texture.

Would I go back to Perch RVA for brunch?

100% yes. I loved the atmosphere, the parking, the jazzy musician, the leis they were handing out at the door, the drink, the friendly waitress, the whole bit.

I’m intrigued by the dinner menu too. Overall, I just love the vibe and appreciate the friendly, genuine service we got. I also want to be a bit more adventurous the next time I order. Maybe some spam?
