Brunch Review: Deep Ellum

Last month I had the opportunity to go up to Boston to visit my friend Petrina who was previously mentioned on this blog as someone who doesn’t believe in free pizza. Petrina is not typically a planner, but for my visit, she set out to create an itinerary for our weekend together.

Knowing I run a brunch blog, she knew we had to get brunch upon my arrival Saturday morning, and I wasn’t going to object. She sent me three options. She described them as 1.) “$$ hipsters,” 2.) “$ (if you do brunch special) and yuppie socialities”, and 3.) “$$ normal young people.”

I Googled the options. Number two’s website had a broken URL for their menu, so that was out. And number three sounded boring. Normal young people? Who wants that?

Brunch Review: Belle & James

For the last several months, I have walked by Belle & James almost everyday on my way to work/class/hell/whatever you want to call grad school. I've been meaning to drop in because I love the name, a reference to two intertwined Richmond landmarks - Belle Isle and the James River - and it just exudes a trendy vibe, which I can get down with.

Imagine my delight then when Jessica, Belle & James' brand manager, invited Sara and I in to try their brunch menu.

Me: Wait, they serve brunch?!

Brunch Review: New York Deli

We started 2016 where pretty much where we ended 2015, at New York Deli. I had a friend in town that we took there for dinner, only to return for brunch the next day. She might think New York Deli is the only restaurant in Richmond, but I'm okay with that.

New York Deli is a great place to brunch because they do breakfast everyday. Plus, their menu is baller, however questionably not up to date because what I ordered does not appear to be included. New York Deli was a dream come true for New Year's Day, as it's a nice walk away to clear the sleepies out of my eyes but not long enough that my slightly hungover self can't make it. Plus, my resolution this year to questionably eat better, but it's not competition time yet so I'm in the clear.

Brunch Review: The Village Inn

The weekend after Christmas, I went shopping with my mom in Virginia Beach aka we returned everything my brother and I didn’t want that Santa gave me. First world problems, anyone?

Halfway through our returns, I realized we had three more stores to go and my blood sugar was about as low as Death Valley. I would have bought a protein bar, but then I realized my mom was with me, and why not go big?

Me: “Mom, do you want to get dinner?”

Brunch Review: Athena II Diner

I headed up to my hometown a few weeks ago for a nice Christmas break. On Saturday evening, I posed my ever popular question, "Where are we brunching tomorrow?"

My dad, knowing that I basically HAVE to brunch whenever possible did a bit of research in preparation for this question. According to some poll, you just have to brunch at Athena 2 and order the waffles. So we went to Athena 2 to see if it lives up to the hype.

Hot and Spicy Qrunch Crust Quiche

A couple of weeks ago I got asked to go on CBS 6's "Virginia This Morning" in honor of Hot and Spicy Food Day (which is tomorrow, so get your chili peppers!). I was asked to tasked with talking about how you can celebrate such an auspicious holiday and incorporate Qrunch Organics, which is a brand ATOB has worked with before. Part of this involved bringing homemade spicy foods to the studio.

If you caught the segment, I ended up making a spicy salad (regular salad topped with a Qrunch burger and chili powder-infused Italian dressing), some spicy nuts, and a Qrunch crust quiche.
