As Told Over Perly's Brunch
Sometimes I hate having to make decisions. Take for example, trying to decide what I wanted at Perly’s for brunch. On first glance, I was thinking I wanted the Benny Goodman, which consists of smoked salmon, two poached eggs and hollandaise on potato latkes. With further consideration, I was eyeing the french toast.
Once I landed on savory, I moved on to insisting that we started with a brunch appetizer. I’ve had the pierogies there before — and I’m Polish — so I was ready to eat them again. But then I wanted to try something new, so we decided to get the Schlubby fries, which consists of fries, Russian dressing, pastrami, cheese and peppers.
Schlubby Fries
My Polish heart loves me some pierogies, but these fries were INSANE. The Russian dressing is creamy, tangy and plentiful. The pastrami was salty and complimented the cheese, jalapenos and sauce perfectly. I think I’d go back to Perly’s just for these fries. They were divine.
Then I’m fairly confident X Ambassadors walked in and I spent the rest of the meal trying to casually steal glances behind me.
But while that was happening, my meal came out. I’d say the fries ruined my appetite, but I was more than ready to eat again once I caught sight of my dish.
Benny Goodman
Last Christmas, my Dad made potato latkes and it was hilarious. And tasty. And ordering this dish reminded me of that memory, which I liked, along with the taste.
The latke was perfectly golden brown, flaky and delicious. Combined with the heaping pile of smoked salmon drenched in hollandaise, this was honestly what my dreams are made of. I don’t know what I was doing wasting time eating the salad, but that was good too. I liked the bread too because — carbs — but I do wish it was served with butter or jam.
The bottom line here is simple. Perly’s is consistently voted and recognized as a top ranked Jewish deli in the country and has been featured in shows like Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives. And there’s a reason for it. The food is delicious, the portions are generous, the decor is warm and inviting (I repeatedly took it all in as I was trying to peek at X Ambassadors) and they know how to turn customers quickly without making you feel like just a number.
Would I eat here again? Hell yes. Just name the date and time.
