Once upon a time, I went through a break-up. Slowly over time people began to slide in minor bits of feedback about what they didn’t like about him in conversations. And then every now and then, it wasn’t minor.

I kept asking why no one would say those things when we were together. I mean, you see red flags that I didn’t, and you just let me keep playing on the train tracks!? What’s the point of having friends if they won’t have your back?

Be a Woman and Advocate for Yourself

I’ve written — somewhat brazenly naively — about apologizing when you’re not sorry to smooth over social situation. To progress this dialogue past where I was when I was 23: sometimes as a woman, it’s difficult to assert yourself, advocate for yourself and do so in a mature, respectful yet unapologetic way.

From a young age, we’re reminded to take care of other people’s feelings, but we don’t often dig into truly how to be your own advocate. I find myself often at an intersection of wanting to prioritize my needs, but fear what “they” will think.

A couple weeks ago (my turnaround time on blog posts lately have been atrocious), I promised ‘more to come’ at the end of a post about Lasik and how that surgery seemed to be the first falling domino is a series of events that led to some serious introspection and soul-searching.

Welp, I wish I didn’t promise that. I don’t quite have a full thought yet to share, so I’ll just do a collection of bits I’ve saved into my phone and call them advice.

Stop Dwelling: Time Waits On No Mortal

I woke up thinking the day would be okay. I had no urgent emails, and from bed, I posted a photo to Instagram - part of my morning ritual. I then made it to the bathroom where I spent too much time peeing because my friend posted an interesting article on Facebook.

The night before I had PB&J, which seemed fitting for Hump Day Eve. Basically, a concessionary meal that we're almost halfway through the week; no need to exert energy that I'll need to get through tomorrow. I dipped my sandwich in milk that I poured into a glass tumbler. I hung the tumbler on the drying rack afterward, because the dishwasher was running.

A few weeks ago, I went to a friends birthday dinner. My friend and I grabbed cupcakes and showed up too early (neither of us thought to check the invite before driving over), so we grabbed a bottle of Prosecco and sat down with the two other people who were there. We were chatting it up and having a fantastic time. I made the rounds around the table to everyone I used to work with, chatting and catching up on their lives: children who are now walking, jobs that are being adjusted to, hobbies that are changing and upcoming travel plans.

"You seem really happy," my friend said. It was perhaps the half a bottle of Proessco I just drank, or it might be that I am actually happy. I smiled and said, "I am doing really well," and continued to talk about everything in my life that's going well (this blog and Richmond Brunch Weekend being successful really does help me feel happy).

Growing up, I wanted to see the world. No one believed me. I don’t even think I believed me. But the last year and a half has shown me (and my parents, friends, and audience members) is that you should’ve believed me. Since March 2016, I’ve been to six countries on five trips and have two more trips on the horizon (plus designs on a bunch more).

Over a short time span, I’ve become the world traveler I always dreamed of being – and you can, too!

I’m not normally one to write how-to articles, but I feel the need to inform friends and acquaintances that I did not come across a large sum of money a year ago and, heck no, I do not have a trust fund. While traveling is pricey, it doesn’t have to be out of the ballpark.

You're Never Going To Be Ready

This is what my grand-mom told me right before she died. I was venting to her, fearful about finally getting out on the road to take my driver’s test, when she looked at me and said something I’ll never forget.

Ten years later, and I’m taking her advice and applying it to everything I know: love, romances, college, finally deciding on a career and, for once, actually sticking to it. My grandmother was wise – but this – this was the wisest reasoning of all.

Cazey Made Me Take a Personality Test and Now My Life Makes Sense

As you've probably been able to tell at this point in our blogging careers (can we use the word careers if we're doing this out of passion and not getting paid for it?), Cazey was a busy guy in college. He eventually became a leader in several organizations on campus, and one encouraged him to take personality tests. He talks about these tests frequently, but I blew him off for years.

I couldn't decipher the difference between personality tests and horoscopes. Both could be right by simply stating enough general traits that at least some will apply to you. I've read my horoscope before, and I barely think I'm making up that my daily horoscope once was, "Some days are better than others." Thanks for that deep insight, I feel like I know myself better now. So why bother taking a useless personality test to get the same general results?

Comma-plaint

Did you notice that comma? The one right after hello? I know, it must be a typo.

WELL, IT'S NOT.

I hate to sound preachy (~choir hums~), but somewhere, somehow, society has run amok. I know this isn't a surprise to everyone, but I don't mean morally, politically, fiscally, or religiously. I mean grammatically. We have forgotten how to write.

You see, my attentive pupils, a comma is supposed to separate a greeting and a name. It is, "Hello, Stephanie, how are you?" It is NOT, "Hello Stephanie, how are you?" You (should!!!!!) address your emails, "Hi, Bill," not "Hi Bill."
